February Poem of the Month!

Walt Whitman (1819–1892).  Leaves of Grass.  1900.

180. When I heard the Learn’d Astronomer

WHEN I heard the learn’d astronomer;
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me;
When I was shown the charts and the diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them;
When I, sitting, heard the astronomer, where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon, unaccountable, I became tired and sick;         5
Till rising and gliding out, I wander’d off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars.

Taste Test: Bagels!!!

Bagels. Everyone loves bagels. Whether you are like me and eat 5-6 bagels a week or you live under a rock and only eat 1-2 a week, we all love them. Warm or room temperature, with cream cheese, butter or plain, bagels are a satisfying breakfast, lunch or dinner food. A lot of companies produce bagels, some specialize in it, and others merely make it on the side. I have had a lot of bagels in my time from a lot of different places. And I was curious as to which one was the best. I chose three popular bagel shops in or near Melrose and tested them out. To keep everything even and fair, I tested plain bagels with plain cream cheese from every shop.

First up: Brueggers. Located on Main Street, Melrose, this bagel shop offers many bagels as well as sandwiches and salads. I ordered a plain bagel as usual with plain cream cheese. The bagel was slightly warm because it was fresh that morning. The bagel itself was warm and soft on the inside but perfectly crunchy on the outside. The plain cream cheese compliments the bagel nicely and over all the combination is very nice.

Second, I tested Finagle-a-bagel. Their bagels are slightly larger than the ones at Brueggers, but not as thick. The products were complimentary as well. The overall package is good. Not absolutely amazing but good. The cafe offers other bagel like foods, like sandwiches and salads.

Third, I tested Bagel World. Their bagels are very good. Much like the others, they are well complimented by their cream cheese. The bagels are of average size and are filling for a meal.

By now you can probably tell which bagel I liked most. Out of convenience, being located right in Melrose, and because of the great taste, Brueggers, to me, is the best bagel!!

Deep thoughts with Duncan, Vol. I

Mr. Girard and Geoff Rowe
Hello, readers of the Imprint blog. I, Duncan McLeod, have taken it upon myself to ask the hard questions to various teachers and students, these questions being of course, ones of deep philosophical nature.  For this article, my five questions focus around the concept of perfection, such as utopia, and my interviewees were the esteemed Mr. Girard, Physics and Chemistry teacher extraordinaire, and Geoff Rowe, snare drummer and student beyond compare.  So follows here the five questions and ten answers provided to your unhumble philosopher, Duncan McLeod.
Mr. Girard was asked: “Do you believe that a utopia or its opposite, a dystopia, could truly exist in this world?” His reply: “No, the way the world has been structured so far, it seems to me to be something we cannot actually achieve.”  I then asked if we are closer to, a dystopia or utopia, and his opinion on this was varied, stating we are closer to a “dystopia, but on some levels of society closer to a utopia.”  I proceeded to ask if a permanent world peace could exist, and he replied in a manner shadowing his answer to the first question. “Based on human history,” he said, “I don’t think that could ever happen.”  The fourth of the questions asked was “Can a perfect being exist?”  To this, he replied “an individual, yeah. It is rare, but possible.”  And the fifth and final questions asked was that of “If such a form of perfection can be achieved, how many paths in life lead there, is there only one path?” and he responded stating that it was “definitely not one path … It would be a long path.” He ended on the bittersweet optimistic statement of “we gotta live life hoping.”
To the student Geoff Rowe the same questions were asked, and his answers were recorded just the same.  When asked if he believed if a utopia or a dystopia could exist, he responded claiming “yes, though it would be unlikely to last particularly long,” and in answer to the second of the queries, he responded that he does believe we are closer to a dystopic society, and did not elaborate further.  When he was asked if he felt that a permanent world peace could exist under any circumstances, he claimed that “perhaps a long lasting peace, but it would eventually come to an end.”  As to the possibility of a perfect being, he believes strongly that it is possible, though whether he feels that there has been such a person he refused to say.  And as to the paths by which one might achieve world peace, utopia, or perfection, he states that if it is possible, there is an infinite number of paths.

Glossary of potentially confusing terms and words used above:
  1. utopia: a perfect society, a paradise
  2. dystopia: a flawed society, a horrible place
  3. extraordinaire: a person of great regard within a field (term of respect and admiration)
  4. shadowing: used here to mean resembling, or alike to
  5. bittersweet optimistic statement: something positive with some negative interpretations
  6. queries: questions

Graduation Caps Cupcake Toppers

What you will need:
-Chocolate covered graham cracker cookies
-small recess cups
-m&ms*
-fruit roll ups*
-frosting*
(*get the colors/flavors to represent your school)

Directions:
First put the recess cups in the fridge, so when you peel of the wrapper the chocolate will not get ripped off as well. Then you can begin separating the m&ms so you have the color of your choice ready in a bowl (if you do not have the color you are looking for you can use brown to blend with the chocolate cookie). Next you will want to unwrap the fruit roll up and cut it into thin slices about a centimeter in width and about four inches long. Then take the cookies and get ready to put the tassels on. Begin this step by folding the fruit roll up so it in a 'V' and place it on the cookie so the ends hang over the side and the fold point is centered. Then take an m&m and get a little bit of frosting on one side of it (to act like glue) and stick it on top of the center of the cookie, on top of the fruit roll up. Repeat this until desired amount are complete. Next, take the recess cups out of the fridge and unwrap them. Spread some frosting on the top of it (the smaller end) and stick the cookie on it. The graduation toppers are now done! In order to stick them on to cupcakes or cakes just use frosting as a 'glue' or even stick them on skewers and keep them as just caps! They are perfect for any graduation celebration!

Mud Cups

Rating: 4.5/5.0
"I'm crying they are so good"

Ingredients:
-Oreos
-pudding
-whipped cream
-gummy worms

Plastic cups and spoons

Directions:
Blend the cookies so they are are 'dirt' or 'sand' consistency. Put a spoonful of the blended cookies at the bottom of the cup, using about half of the mixture. Next, you will want to layer your choice of chocolate pudding onto the cookies in the cup. After you are done with the pudding, you will add about a third of a cup of whipped cream to each individual cup. Use the rest of the cookies to cover the whipped cream and finish the mud cup off with a gummy worm or two! Chill in the fridge and enjoy! The amount of each ingredient can be changed for different mud consistencies.
